1. Phõn từ
Phõn từ (Participle) - hay cũn gọi là phõn động từ là từ do động từ tạo ra và cú đặc điểm như một tớnh
từ
Cỏc loại phõn từ:
A. PHÂN TỪ HIỆN TẠI
Phõn từ hiện tại hay cũn gọi là hiện tại phõn từ được tạo ra bằng cỏch thờm đuụi –ing vào phớa sau
động từ nguyờn mẫu.
Vớ dụ: write ⇒ writing
Cỏch dựng:
- Đi sau động từ “tobe” để tạo thành thỡ hiện tại tiếp diễn:
Vớ dụ: She is listening to radio. (Cụ ấy đang nghe đài).
- Sử dụng như một tớnh từ để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ:
Vớ dụ: She told me an amusing story. (Cụ ấy đó kể cho tụi nghe một cõu chuyện vui)
- Thay thế, rỳt gọn mệnh đề:
+ Khi hai hành động cú cựng chủ ngữ, xảy ra đồng thời hoặc hành động thứ 2 là một phần hoặc kết
quả của hành động thứ nhất, ta cú thể rỳt gọn như sau:
Vớ dụ: Before I left, I sent an email for her. ⇒ Before leaving, I sent an email for her.
+ Rỳt gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ chỉ thời gian:
Vớ dụ: Because I fail the exam, I don’t want to come back home.
⇒ Failing the exam, I don’t want to come back home.
+ Rỳt gọn mệnh đề quan hệ:
Vớ dụ: The boy who stands opposite us is a millionaire.
⇒ The boy standing opposite us is a millionaire.

Phõn từ hoàn thành được tạo ra bằng cỏch kết hợp “having” và quỏ khứ phõn từ.
Phõn từ hoàn thành cú chức năng là nhấn mạnh hành động xảy ra trước trong 2 hành động.
Vớ dụ: After she had bought a new book, she came back home.
⇒ Having bought a new book, she came back home. (Sau khi mua quyển sỏch mới, cụ ấy trở về nhà).
