1. High school is a time when parents realize that their children may soon become independent and not rely on them. 2. High school provides a safe environment with opportunities to explore various job options. 3. Many students find the idea of looking for work overwhelming, and doubt and confusion often take over 4. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) focuses solely on educational goals and doesn't include a transition plan. 5. The IEP transition plan helps students smoothly transition from school to employment. 6. It is recommended to start planning for work readiness by the age of 14. 7. Based on the IEP transition plan, students may have the opportunity to go on job visits and find an after-school job. 8. Parents can discourage students from dreaming or trying new things by being overly protective. 9. The Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) encourages students to leave school before the age of 21 to find employment. 10. Parents can play an important role in helping students with their work-readiness plan by being involved in the development of the IEP transition plan. The earlier you start planning, usually by 14 but at least by 16, the more time you have to prepare. Each school is different, but based on your IEP transition plan, you may be able to go on job visits, find an after-school job, and get some additional education. You may even learn new skills that may help lead to a career. One of the best things is, you will be able to dream and talk about all of the possibilities in the work world and start to focus on what might be a good fit for you. Knowing your interests, your school can try to connect you with suitable companies where those interests might fit. For example, if you're interested in computers, maybe visit a software company. If you like animals, maybe a veterinarian clinic so you can learn more about what they do. Many different possibilities can be looked at, but only if you have a plan. Work is a "job", but it's good when you can find a career you enjoy. During high school is a great time to explore different careers so you are ready at graduation. At the Developmental Disabilities Administration, DDA, we encourage you to stay in school until you are 21, if you haven't already found employment or plan to continue education, so we can provide our full services to you. This can also be an overwhelming time for your parents. Part of that is because parents don't want you to fail. So they try to protect you. Sometimes too much. This might discourage you from dreaming or trying new things. Parents can play an important role helping you with your work-readiness plan by being involved in the development of your IEP transition plan and learning about what's available today. When your parents are fully involved, they can help you work on your skills at home so you are even more prepared and ready to transition from high school to the job or continuing education world after high school. If you have done all of this work and readiness planning during high school, you will be successful transitioning to work with DDA when you are 21. They will work with you and an employer to help you build a successful lifetime career. Different opportunities exist for every person because each of us has a unique set of skills and interests. So dream about what you want to be. Find your fit and work hard during high school so you are ready and prepared for the transition when that right opportunity knocks on your door.
